A faster CPC path with apprenticeship-credit upside, but the cohort evidence is still early.

Our take on Penn Foster

The CPC track that skips the apprenticeship year — if you're okay being an early cohort.

Will this get you hired?

If you pass the CPC exam afterward, yes — and you skip the two-year apprenticeship most new coders work through. That's the reason to pick it. But the program only launched in 2024, so there's no public data on how its graduates actually do on the CPC exam yet.

What you'll actually experience

One near-graduate says the materials are dense and the experience was positive. A currently-enrolled student in spring 2026 reports recurring quiz-quality problems: typos, incorrectly keyed answers, content showing up on quizzes before it's taught. An outside reviewer flags that several listed courses aren't on the CPC exam. Format is self-paced with minimal instructor involvement.[1][2][3]

What you're betting on

That you can self-direct for 18 months without instructor accountability, that the quiz-quality complaints don't get worse, and that AAPC actually treats the included Practicode hours the way Penn Foster says — skipping the apprenticeship year. If any of those don't hold, you find out with the tuition already paid.[2]

Career overview

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist at a glance

Medical billing and coding is administrative health care work. You translate clinical notes into billing codes, help claims move through the system, and keep records clean enough for insurers and providers to use.

  • Daily work: Use ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to document diagnoses, procedures, and reimbursement details.

  • Work setting: Most jobs sit inside physician practices, hospitals, insurers, billing companies, or skilled nursing facilities.

  • Remote reality: Remote jobs exist, but they are easier to land after you have coding experience and strong specialty knowledge.
